How to Shop for Next Year’s Holiday
To improve holiday spending techniques, try the following suggestions:

  • Tally up the cost of last year's holiday so you can assess the damage and learn from your mistakes.

  • Starting saving for the holidays as early as possible.

  • Know when to shop. Great deals abound all year. Post-Christmas sales will yield every kind of bargain imaginable. It’s a great time to stock up on gifts and holiday paraphernalia for next year. Winter sweaters and long pants go on sale in February. Shorts and t-shirts go on sale in July. If you’re shopping for kids, buy one size larger than the child is now (just don’t buy trendy items that may not be cool by next year).

  • Check out flea markets, garage sales and thrift shops.

  • As you get closer to the holidays, prepare a shopping budget, remembering to leave enough for food, clothing, wrapping, postage and so on. These costs really add up, so you need to plan carefully for them.

  • Make a shopping list.

  • Never shop at the last minute. It’s the surest way to go over budget.

  • Remember to use cash or a debit card. Think of credit cards as very expensive, short-term loans. Avoid using them. Stay away, especially, from department store credit cards.

  • If you must charge, use the card with the lowest rate. Be sure you budget for this ahead of time so that the bills can be paid off within three months.

  • Consider giving the gift of time. Run errands, wash a car; spend an hour or two teaching someone a skill or hobby you know well and love.
